Once you have determined that you will start an Import business, you will need to begin by making contacts. Fortunately, there is very little financial overhead that you will need, however you may find that you are required to travel to foreign and distant lands (all work related of course) to find the best products to import.

You will need to carefully analyze the market, and you must have a "knack" for finding the best products to import. If however you are not in a position to travel all is not lost, you can do a search on directories like Alibaba.com where companies are advertising their products for sale to international markets. 

 

  

  

 

The main concern with these companies to ensure that the businesses that you will be dealing with overseas are both reputable and legitimate. A good resource to help you with this is the UK. Embassies that are located in the areas where you would like to establish relationships. Once you have determined that the businesses are legitimate, you will then begin importing those products to the domestic markets

If you are looking to purchase branded goods it is imperative to ensure that the goods that being sold  are not fakes.  I had reason to question one such supplier recently who said that they were the approved distributors of a particular high quality kitchen knife. When I checked  this out with the manufacturers I was told that they were not and as such chose not to purchase from them!

Analyzing the field is critical to your success as an importer. You need to ensure that the products that you are importing are truly in demand in the domestic market.

Demographics may also play a part in where and how you sell your products, it may be that you fnd that certain areas are more acceptable for those products then others, are willing to pay a better price or have a specific need for your product.
